UGANDA

Boasting of very fertile and some parts volcanic soils, the microclimates, plus incredible terrains, Uganda is an ideal location for specialty coffee production.Uganda has always been traditionally known for Robusta coffee, an indigenous species that still grows wild in the country’s rainforests - producing some of the highest quality on the world market.

Arabica Coffee is grown mainly in the following regions:• Western Region - Mbarara, Ibanda, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Rukungiri, Kanungu to Kasese on the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains- also known as the mountains of the moon in the southwest (bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo)• Eastern Region - Mbale, Bugisu on the slopes of Mount Elgon (bordering Kenya)• Central and Southwest Region - Kayunga, Jinja, Mukono, Kampala, Luwero, Mpigi, Rakai, Mubende, Kiboga, Masaka (by Lake Victoria)• Northern Region - West Nile areas such as Lira, GuluEach coffee producing region is distinctly different coupled with varied production methods, adding to uniquely nuanced coffee flavour-profiles.

Although Coffee is Uganda’s top earning export crop and currently Africa’s leading exporter by volume, the production has not been attracting very high prices but, thanks to recent, ongoing deliberate investment in relevant infrastructure and knowledge to focus on quality practices such as careful harvesting and diligent processing among other interventions, committed specialty natural processed and washed coffee producers are beginning to realise the positive results.

We, at 2nd Mile Speciality, therefore believe that our little contribution to partner the hardworking producers and getting these incredible coffees to our world, will ultimately have a significant impact for the economic transformation of the farming community that constitutes of over 60% of Uganda’s population, with over 3.5 million households working in coffee- related activities.

Please keep on the look out for our delicious Uganda origin coffees.

The Engagi Natural is grown on the agricultural lands surrounding the designated UNESCO-World Heritage Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, known to be some of the most fertile volcanic soils in the world.

This micro lot is named Engagi, meaning "gorilla" which stems from the local Rukiga language spoken in and around the Bwindi community, near the endangered mountain gorillas conservation area.

The freshly picked coffee cherries are delivered to our producer’s central washing station where diligent processing and drying take place. They able to process their own coffees as well as buy from the smallholder farmers who grow coffee in small plots alongside their food crops. Their focus is using coffee to positively impact their community while striving to improve quality.
